Kruno Prijatelj

Kruno Prijatelj (1922, Split - 1998), was an Croatian art historian, art critic and University professor.
Significant was his contribution to the history of art in Dalmatia, as he revealed many previously unknown artists and solving many problems of attribution.
At the time he was indisputably one of the greatest connoisseurs of Baroque in Dalmatia, so as to be called Prijatelj od Baroka (Friend of the Baroque).〔This is an untranslatable play on words in english, since prijatelj in Croatian means friend〕

Kruno Prijatelj was born in Split, Croatia.
The formation of Prijatelj took place during the turbulent period of the Second World War he studied art history between Zagreb and Rome, finally he graduated in University of Zagreb in 1946. The following year he received his Ph.D. in Zagreb, with a thesis Baroque in Split.
Between 1950 - 1979, he worked as director in Gallery of Fine Arts, Split. These years were the most fertile of his life, providing a formidable contribution to the knowledge of art history in Croatia. Kruno Prijatelj was the most important Croatian scholar of his generation in the field of Dalmatian art history, particularly Baroque period.
He wrote about great figures of the Dalmatian art, but he also rediscoved lesser-known artists such as Matteo Ponzone. Courageous its attribution of several works to Biagio di Giorgio da Traù, an itinerant Italian painter with scattered acts between Zadar, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, Ston and Čiovo.
Since 1972, he taught contemporary art history at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, as adjunct professor. From 1979, he taught art history at the University of Zadar until his retirement in 1991. Since 1968, he was a regular member of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts.
He died in Split 1998.
